It was home to the Arakwal people, who are part of the Bundjalung group when they first came to the area. Arakwal called this meeting place ‘Cavvanbah,’ which was also the name of the settlement until it was renamed Byron Bay in 1894 after the arrival of the British.

Not his nephew, poet Lord Byron, but rather Admiral Byron was the inspiration for Captain Cook’s original designation of Cape Byron. Many of Byron’s streets are named after famous poets, however, as a result of the poetic inspiration.

Byron Bay was a working-class port town for much of its history, despite its current sophistication. It was founded in 1895 as a dairy cooperative with a piggery as an addition. Byron’s Meatworks was located near the seashore at Belongil between 1913 and 1920.

Beginning in the 1930s, a sand mining company extracted minerals from the beaches, and beginning in the 1950s, the Byron Bay Whaling Co. began capturing and killing whales, which continued until the company was closed in 1962.

As for Byron, its transformation into a tourist destination began with the discovery of the area by surfers in the 1960s, followed by settlers from the cities, particularly the wave of new-age settlers who descended on the region for the 1973 Aquarius Festival.

The location has since been discovered by new generations of Australians, earning it a spot among the world’s top backpacking destinations….

The town of Byron has grown into a destination for vacationers, those seeking pleasure or healing as well as those interested in nature and alternative lifestyles over the past 30 years.
